Sonam Targee

Sonam teaches classes in Ayurveda and Tantra to Yoga practitioners and medical students around the country, and now with more than twenty three years of clinical and teaching experience he offers you the opportunity to study with him.

Traditionally in India, Ayurveda, Tantra, and Yoga are considered to be the "3 sisters" of Vedic culture, training the Body, Mind, and Spirit, respectively.

It is especially important that American Yoga students understand the other 2 sisters in order to enhance their knowledge and practice of the full breadth of Yoga. Understanding the relationship of Ayurveda, Tantra, and Yoga will deepen the practitioner's experience of Yoga thus making one's practice even more meaningful.

Knowledge of one's Ayurvedic constitutional type informs the Yoga student what postures to emphasize and teaches what herbs and which dietary regimen will increase flexibility and stamina. Learning Tantra encourages confidence and gives purpose to one's practice. Tantric practice employs mantra (which translates: mind protection) and visualization; the practitioner will learn to focus the mind. The inclusion of Ayurveda and Tantra into one's Yoga practice strengthens one's whole self and offers the practitioner an integrated enlightened life.

Sonam graduated in 1983 from the New England School of Acupuncture in Boston, MA., with a Masters degree in Chinese Medicine having studied with the late Dr. James Tin Yao So, and Ted Kaptchuk. He met Dr. Vasant Lad and began the study of Ayurveda in 1987. He also studied with such luminaries of herbology as Dr. Robert Svoboda, Dr. Yeshe Donden (the former personal physician to HH the 14th Dalai Lama), David Winston, and Susun Weed. Sonam holds a Masters degree in Herbology from Emerson College in Ontario, Canada and a Practitioners Certification in Neuro-Linguistic Programming from the New England Institute of NLP. Sonam also holds a Bachelors of Professional Studies in Ethnomusicology from Empire State College in Rochester, NY. He has been in clinical practice for over 23 years.

Living in Upstate New York with his wife and children, Sonam is also actively involved with his community leading regular Kirtans, teaching, and playing multiple instruments. He has been playing and singing sacred music from around the world for more than 30 years. Trained in mridangam, he has especially loved the devotional chanting of India. The instruments Sonam uses include the recorder family, the Native American love flute, the Bulgarian kaval, the Indian bansurai flute and punji, the Mongolian bahu, the Tibetan lingbu, the Balinese flute, and the European cornetto, as well as the harmonium, the dumbec, finger cymbals, tar, Irish penny whistle, Peruvian quena, and of course, his voice. His intention is to share the joy and beauty of world music in order to draw people together and purify hearts and minds. He is available to perform for any type of event.
